What an unbelievable and unprecedented run to the top of the mountain for this team! And boy, I tell ya, I can’t get enough of watching the celebration videos and postgame interviews with the players.
As I’ve been reflecting on this amazing week, a few key words and phrases keep ringing in my ears. I think there’s a lot we can learn from this team, and not just about baseball.
1. The Secret is: THERE IS NO SECRET.
The Brewers were an absolute model of consistency. No magic formula, no shortcuts, no overnight success. Just showing up, trusting the process, sticking to the fundamentals, and putting in the work day after day.
It’s a great reminder that consistency beats intensity when intensity can’t be sustained. Fundamentals beat fads, and progress beats perfection.
We often get caught up looking for the next big thing; meanwhile, the basics are sitting right in front of us, patiently waiting for us to actually do them.
What can we learn? Show up every day, especially on the hard days. Focus on the things you can control, master the fundamentals, and work your a$$ off. You don’t need a secret formula. You need a plan and the discipline to stick with it.
2. “Worry is a waste of time.” –Pat Murphy
If there’s one thing we could all use a little less of, it’s worrying.
So many of us, myself included, spend countless hours worrying about how we look, how others perceive us, what to wear, what to eat, and what might happen tomorrow. The list goes on.
But how much of that energy actually moves us forward?
Murphy’s message is a great reminder to focus on what we can control rather than wasting energy on everything we can’t. You can control your preparation, your effort, and how you respond when things don’t go your way.
The same applies to our health and fitness. We can’t undo yesterday’s missed workout or poor food choices, and we can’t predict exactly what tomorrow will bring. But we can make better decisions today.
What can we learn? Live in the present, make decisions that support the person you want to become tomorrow, and stop sweating the small stuff. Spend less time worrying about the things you can’t control and more time taking action on the things you can.
3. “The Power of Friendship.” –Trevor Megill
In a world where we’re constantly being pushed to pick a side or separate ourselves based on our differences, there’s something pretty special about a group of people who genuinely have each other’s backs.
The Brewers showed us the power of having a strong group of people around you. The people we surround ourselves with shape us. They challenge us, encourage us, hold us accountable, and help us become better versions of ourselves.
And sometimes, being a good friend isn’t about telling someone what they want to hear. It’s about having the tough conversations, setting higher expectations, and reminding someone of what they’re capable of when they might have forgotten.
This applies to our health and fitness, too. Having a training partner, coach, friend, or family member who encourages you and holds you accountable can make all the difference. We don’t always need someone to pick us up when we’re down. Sometimes we need someone who won’t let us stay down.
What can we learn? Surround yourself with people who make you better. Don’t shy away from the hard conversations, and don’t underestimate how much someone might need to feel supported and loved, even if that support comes in the form of a little tough love.
I don’t want to get too sappy on a Thursday morning, but this group has genuinely inspired me to put my best foot forward, both personally and professionally.
Championships are won on the field, but the habits, relationships, and work that lead to them are built long before anyone gets to celebrate.
